Buried Treasure

This is my absolute favorite vegetable I've grown. Potatoes grow without much help. And all through the season, as the tops keep popping up through the mound you build, underneath the most wonderful thing is happening. When it's time to harvest the potatoes, it's like having Christmas to me. Kneeling down in the dirt, I won't even use gloves. Digging in to the cool soil, letting my fingernails blacken as I search for hidden treasures. Pulling one, two, more more more, delighting at finding each one. A gardener's playground.

You've almost convinced me to plant a garden.....next year.

My Dad's had a huge garden since I was little and it's always included potatoes. They have a newspaper clipping of me holding one of the huge ones when I was 2 or 3. It was almost the size of my head.

A word of warning: potatoes that are exposed to direct sunlight get sunburned and turn green. They also become toxic and will make you sick. Toss any and all green ones.

Is that Mickey Mouse?

Has Disney hit you with a copyright infringement suit yet?

Jaded, it turns me into a little kid.

Suebob, oh man, I roasted those three babies last night with some other lovely veg and they were yummy.

Meno, oh go for it. There's just nothing like picking something and eating that same night. Our green beans this year had me wishing I'd planted twice as many. And the tomatoes. *sigh*

Gordo, I've heard of this green potato thing, been keeping my eye out for it. I'd like to have a potato as big as my head!

Clowncar, don't go getting me in trouble.
